How Does Teams Direct Routing Work?

Each user needs to have Microsoft Teams Phone added to their MS licence. Teams Phone is included in the Education A5 licence and an add-on for the Education A1 and A3 licences. You will then need to connect Microsoft Teams to the traditional phone network via either a Microsoft Calling Plan or using Direct Routing.

A Calling Plan is the default Microsoft solution for using Teams for your school’s external PSTN calls. Microsoft Calling Plans are offered on a per-user license and require you to take out a minute’s bundle for each user. Once connected, you can use Teams via Direct Connect to place or receive business calls, create voice menus, monitor and record calls and queue from landlines and mobile phones on the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

MS Teams Direct Routing is a cost-effective way to connect Microsoft’s Phone System to the public telephony network. While there are similarities between this solution and Calling Plans, Direct Routing connects you to the PSTN via a more cost-effective telephony provider, rather than Microsoft themselves. Direct Routing is designed to convert Teams into a functioning PBX, your academic telephony can now be unified in one platform.
